Overview of Courses

Foundation Diploma

The Foundation Diploma (FD) is designed for individuals with little or no industry experience who want to gain practical knowledge and a recognized qualification.

To earn the diploma, candidates must pass two exams in the same sitting:

  • Introduction to Shipping (mandatory), and
  • One additional subject from Group 1 (excluding Shipping Business) or from the Group 2 optional papers listed in the Institute’s syllabus.

The Foundation Diploma is a respected stand-alone qualification. It also serves as a stepping stone toward the Professional Qualifying Exams required for ICS membership.  This diploma offers a strong introduction to the shipping industry and easing you into further study.

Advanced Diploma

The Advanced Diploma (AD) is ideal for individuals with some industry experience and is designed as a stepping stone toward the full professional qualification.

To earn the Advanced Diploma, candidates must pass two subjects in the same exam sitting.

Like the Foundation Diploma, it is a respected stand-alone qualification and also counts toward the Professional Qualifying Examinations (PQEs) required for ICS membership.  This diploma provides a broader understanding of the maritime industry and is a great way to continue your studies while working toward full professional status.

Professional Qualifying Exams (PQE), Pathway to ICS Membership

The PQEs represent the highest level of qualification offered by the Institute. Successfully passing these seven exams shows your advanced knowledge and understanding of the commercial shipping industry.

Of the seven PQE exams, four are compulsory, while the remaining three can be selected from a list of 12 optional subjects.  The exams can be taken flexibly over a period of up to five years, allowing you to complete the programme in stages.

Both the Foundation Diploma and Advanced Diploma count as two PQE credits, helping you progress toward full ICS membership.

Membership by Dissertation

Alternatively, you can become a Member via the submission of a Dissertation. The Dissertation is an opportunity to display the depth of knowledge and experience equivalent to the Institute’s Professional Qualifying Exams (PQE).

The Dissertation should be an original research project related to international shipping, logistics and supply chain management based on relevant literature and appropriate empirical work. You are required to appraise current research, deploy specialist techniques and critically appraise results to advance knowledge by presenting findings in a dissertation.
